Appearance: With straight, dark, cleanly kept hair, a pale complexion, short stature, and narrowed red eyes that look right through you -- quite literally -- Ray is an Asian beauty. She dresses simply but boldly, even seductively, with a white sleeveless belly shirt and a black miniskirt; one might say she is completely, unabashedly happy with her body, despite its obvious flaws: one of them being the branded mark on her back with the numbers "075 - 1 - 74" on it. She also wears a long, gray trenchcoat with her clothes, usually.

Personality: Ray appears at first to be an intensely private person; she has a cool, composed, sometimes even emotionless demeanor and is adamantly stubborn at times, but in truth she is deeply passionate about the things she believes in. She has a girlish side in which she likes to show off, as well (sometimes seen in the way she dresses), but tends to keep that well hidden beneath her solidly calm veneer. Ray has a sharp tongue, too, when she wants to, and is not afraid to speak her mind. She rarely makes rash judgments, always sure to think about things before doing them, but can also think such things through quickly, being a surgeon; it's part of her job, after all. Although on the surface Ray appears distant, unapproachable, and imperturbable, perhaps even antisocial, she still has all the emotions of a normal human being, including things such as love... and guilt.

Abilities/Strengths: Ray is a surgeon and has all the knowledge of the body and its functions that any doctor should. She is potent and precise with a scalpel -- to potential threats to the body, that is. Her eyes only aid these natural abilities of hers, for they are actually x-ray eyes and are able to see into human bodies (as well as under clothes if necessary). She is able to work efficiently and almost inhumanly fast, even for someone with x-ray vision, making her very sought after for difficult surgeries in her world.

Weapons: None, unless you count doctor tools and a proficient knowledge of the human body.

Weaknesses: Ray is but a human, and, save for her eyes, has no powers to speak of. She could probably be overtaken by someone stronger than her physically, though she would most likely be able to put up a decent fight before going down. Despite this, though, she's not gifted with any sort of fighting ability beyond what would be expected of a twenty-odd-year-old woman. Also, she does not have a medical license; like the doctor who operated on her at one point in her life, she does not believe it is necessary to have one in order to be a good surgeon, and has therefore never pursued such a thing.

History: In the near future, a girl was growing up with other children in an institution which raised children in order to harvest their organs on the black organ transplant market. However, all these children were clones, and all were considered "failed clones", as the objective was to allow them to remember the memories of their "former life" (the person whose DNA they contain), however, none of these children did. So as a "form of recycling", they were kept and raised to sell their organs later when the need arose.

She called herself "Ray", because the numbers on her back equaled zero when subtracted, and "rei" is the Japanese word for zero, although she had no real name to speak of. She was, in truth, a clone of the organization head's mother -- known as the "H ring man". She was eventually rescued by an underground doctor called Black Jack, and, having lost her eyes under the H ring man's command, received a new pair of special x-ray eyes. Ray was then told she was free to live her life as she wished.

Ray was adopted by Dr. Kasugano, who was a surgeon. Ten years later, she became a well-known and respected surgeon like her adoptive mother due to her sharp skill and unique eyes. She begins to work at a hospital, taking up some particularly bizarre cases, and in time, uncovering the truth about the organization who raised her for the first ten years of her life, as well as the whereabouts of the other children she was raised with. She makes it her mission to locate these children. She works collectively with Shinoyama, her business partner who also happens to be madly in love with her... and isn't afraid to show it. (However, he does not wish to burden her and also says if she tells him to leave, he'll leave... she never
does, though.)

Very long story short: as time goes on, Ray's first love, Kouichi, contacts her, having proposed escaping with her from the farm they were raised on when they were young. He does not allow her to get close to him until much later, when it is revealed that he is a clone of the H ring man himself and that Ray is a clone of the H ring man's mother, making them genetically mother-and-son. Although he claims he is nothing like the man he was cloned from, he shows the same level of maniacal obsession with Ray as the H ring man does. He attempts to recreate the white room they were raised in and gather together all the children who they were together with, so as to create a "paradise" for all of them. To complete this setup, Ray's original eyes must be returned to her, and they are in her work partner Shinoyama's childhood friend, Sumire. When taken to the operation room, Ray refuses to get on the operating table, and compares him to the H ring man in that they're both obsessed with recreating the past, and that the eyes she has have made her who she is today.

Another child she was raised with, called Red Ribbon, who is also in love with Kouichi and irritated that he only has eyes for Ray, finds out about their genetic relation when Ray reveals it to Kouichi in the operating room. In a jealous rage, she makes an attempt at Ray's life with a scalpel, but is shot by Kouichi before she can do anything. Ray runs to her side and breaks down sobbing, and Kouichi begins to realize his wrongs. Ray stands up, but the pain in her head from a previous encounter makes her pass out. Kouichi, however, thinks she is dead, so, admitting his wrongs, he shoots himself in the head. They meet in a dream one last time, and Kouichi thanks her for letting him see the outside, and then disappears.

She wakes up in her house with Shinoyama taking care of her after the hospital staff rescues her from the island she was taken to during Kouichi's plan. Later, because her vision is fading, Black Jack returns to do a second operation on her x-ray eyes to restore them to full sight.

After the operation, though, she's nowhere to be found, as she's been pulled into Econtra...
